Keio Opencourseware Help

This is a collection of answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the contents of Keio Opencourseware (Keio OCW).

1) What is Keio OCW?

Keio OCW is open-ended educational content consisting of information such as lecture notes and syllabi from Keio University's undergraduate and graduate courses, which is made available on the Internet free of charge for anyone to use and to study worldwide.
As long as the permission regulations (see 15 or 17 ) established here are followed, Keio OCW content can be used by scholars and others involved in education as reference for classes and research, and, for educational purposes, it can be modified as necessary for it to be made available and used. This digitized content can also be adapted in any form the user desires. It is expected that these forms will develop further in the future.
The purpose of offering this material is to make it available free of charge to anyone with Internet access, and to transform the knowledge that is possessed by Keio University into a form that can be used by the whole of society. In addition, by disseminating to the world material that supports the advanced education traditionally pursued by Keio University, the university also hopes to promote research exchange between educational institutions throughout the world, and to contribute to the development of new, advanced educational programs that will be required in education in the future.
This effort to offer the content of university lectures on the Web was initiated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA as MIT OpenCourseWare.

2) What is the connection between Keio OCW and MIT OCW? Also, are you offering Japanese translated versions of MIT OCW?

OCW, the offering of the contents of university lectures on the Web, was initiated in 2000 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Unlike closed Web courses that target a particular group of people, such as existing forms of correspondence education and e-learning, OCW course material is offered openly on the Web and has been welcomed and used by students and educational institutions across the globe. Given this response, MIT decided to spread this innovation in education by extending open curriculum to universities around the world, and in 2004 selected universities were invited to participate. Keio University, with its history of leading-edge research development in the information sector and its control of extensive educational resources as the oldest comprehensive university in Japan, made the decision to participate in OCW.
Keio OCW is based on the concept of MIT OCW, which provides free use of educational material mainly in English, but it offers material from courses at Keio University, which is not a translated version of MIT OCW. What this site and MIT OCW have in common is the concept of a user-friendly program for educators and learners all over the world.

3) Is Keio OCW Keio University distance learning using the Internet? Is it e-learning using the Internet?

Keio OCW offers information from lectures at Keio that can be used freely for education or independent learning. OCW is not Keio University distance learning and does not count towards undergraduate or graduate degrees. Use of the information offered on this site has absolutely no connection to the granting of course credits or degrees. This OCW is a contribution to open-ended education and the new development of educational content. It is offered as a reference to the main kinds of lectures at Keio University and how they are put together for use by scholars as study material, or to be used or adapted by educators as material for their own teaching. Keio OCW is not intended as e-learning material that one applies or registers for and then completes. The content of the lectures has not been modified for its use in Keio OCW on the Internet. The digitized material is offered in basically the same form in which it was used in the course. Keio OCW is strictly limited as an offering of course material usable by anyone, and it is not offered as course participation in distance learning or e-learning that Keio University is responsible for.

With regard to assignments and examinations, the situation with each course differs. In some courses, assessment depends on oral presentations or discussion, for example, and some faculty members have opted to withhold specific questions from assignments or examinations. On the left side of the lecture information, the material that is used for each particular course is shown.
