English Literature H: Painting, Italy, and English Literature, Spring-Fall 2004

[Instructor]
MATSUDA,Takami

[Course Guide]
The course will examine English literature as an aspect of European culture by relating it to two subjects: Painting and Italy. It will focus on narrative painting and its literary sources as well as on works of literature inspired by specific paintings, while introducing iconographical approaches to the study of early modern English literature. The course, with the help of specific examples, will deal with the instances in which Italian culture and art are received into English literature from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. The first half of the course is normally covered in the spring term, the second half in the fall term. Evaluation will be based on two papers, one turned in at the end of each term.
